5.3.5 Networking Devices

Networking Devices Overview

  • Essential for network setup; facilitates communication between endpoint devices (computers, smartphones).

  • Ensures smooth and efficient data sharing.

Modem

  • Translates ISP signals for device understanding (modulates/demodulates signals).

  • Connects home LAN to ISP network.

  • Maintains ISP connection; can be provided by ISP or purchased separately.

  • Commonly connected to a router for wired/wireless device connections.

Router

  • Acts like a traffic light managing internet traffic in a home.

  • Ensures smooth communication and directs data accurately.

  • Types of Routers:

    • Consumer Routers:

    • Suitable for small offices or homes.

    • Offers both wired and wireless connections; limited signal strength.

    • Commercial Routers:

    • Designed for large companies with high traffic needs.

    • Provides only wired connections; stronger signal and higher capacity.

  • Configuration done via web browser or Command Line Interface (CLI) for settings like Wi-Fi names and passwords.

  • Firmware updates are necessary for maintenance.

Switch

  • Functions like delivery trucks; directs information to specific LAN destinations.

  • More efficient than hubs (which broadcast info to all devices).

  • Connects between 4 to 96 devices using RJ-45 Ethernet connections.
