Transitions

Transitions are classifies into eight groups.

Group 1 (contradiction)

A. contrast

  • opposite ideas

  • different tones

  • different subject

    words: however, on the other hand, in contrast, conversely, but, instead, meanwhile, on the contrary, otherwise

B. Concession

  • same subject

  • different tones

  • unexpected idea in the second sentence

    words: however, nevertheless, nonetheless, in spite of, despite, regardless, actually, in reality, granted, although, though, though, even though, yet, rather, still.

Group 2 (Addition group)

  • same subject

  • same tone

  • new idea in second sentence

    Words: additionally, moreover, furthermore, also, in addition, and, as well, besides

Group 3 (Emphasis group)

  • same subject/ topic/ idea

  • same tone + more details about the topic to emphasize, support, and prove it

    Words: in fact, indeed.

Group 4 (example group)

  • gives an example

  • general - specific

    Words: for instance, for example, specifically, to illustrate, such as

Group 5 (cause and effect)

  • cause - reason

  • effect - result

    Words: because, so, accordingly, to this end, consequently, therefore, thus, as a result, hence.

Group 6 (sequence group)

  • shows order, sequence, or steps.

  • you cant use the word ‘second’ unless you see the word ‘first’

    Words: subsequently, first, second, afterwards, next, then, finally, eventually

Group 7 (comparison group)

  • different subject

  • same ideas/ similarities

  • same tone

    Words: similarly, likewise, in the same way, correspondingly, just as

Group 8 (summary group)

  • same topic

  • same tone

  • brief restatement of what has been mentioned earlier

    Words: in summary, in short, to sum up, in conclusion, in other words
