An EXPRESSION is a mathematical phrase that includes:
Numbers, variables, and operators (such as +, -, x, and ÷).
Examples:
3x + 9
-7y +
1.3a² - 4ab + 2
3a² - 12ab + 6b²
Terms in Expressions
Expressions consist of one or more TERMS.
A TERM can be:
A single number
The product of a number and one or more variables
Terms are usually separated by a plus or minus sign.
Examples of Terms:
3x + 9
7a²
ab + 6b²
Chapter 22: Types of Expressions
Monomial
A MONOMIAL consists of only 1 term.
Example: 38m
Binomial
A BINOMIAL consists of 2 terms.
Example: -7y + 1
Trinomial
A TRINOMIAL consists of 3 terms.
Example: 8a² - ab + 6b²
Polynomial
A POLYNOMIAL consists of multiple terms, represented by variables and coefficients.
Definitions:
COEFFICIENT: Numerical part of a term with a variable.
VARIABLE: Letter(s) representing a value.
Chapter 23: The Degree of Expressions
Exponents
Sometimes, a variable can take an EXPONENT.
Example for determining the Degree of Monomials:
7a² has a degree of 2.
1.79x³y² has a degree of 5 (3+2).
2a²bc² has a degree of 7 (2+1+4).
