🌊 Huygens–Fresnel Principle – Explained Simply
The Huygens–Fresnel Principle is a fundamental concept in wave optics that describes how light waves propagate. It combines ideas from Christiaan Huygens (1678) and Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1816).
📘 Statement of the Principle:
"Every point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary spherical wavelets, and the new wavefront at any later time is the envelope (tangent surface) of all these secondary wavelets."
🌀 Key Concepts:
Wavefront: A surface connecting points of equal phase (e.g. crest-to-crest in a light wave).
Secondary wavelets: Imagine each point on the wavefront emitting its own tiny spherical wave.
New wavefront: The surface that just touches all these secondary wavelets is where the wave has moved to — this becomes the next wavefront.
