Science for DENSITY!
1. Mass
Definition: Mass (mm) is a scalar quantity that measures the total amount of matter in an object.
SI Unit: Kilogram (kgkg); commonly measured in grams (gg) in laboratory settings.
Properties:
Remains constant regardless of location or gravitational force.
Measured using a balance.
2. Volume
Definition: Volume (VV) measures the amount of three-dimensional space an object or substance occupies.
SI Unit: Cubic meter (m3m3); standard fluid or laboratory units include cubic decimeters (dm3dm3) or cubic centimeters (cm3cm3).
Measurement Methods:
Geometric calculations for regular shapes (e.g., V=s3V=s3 for a cube).
Fluid displacement methods for irregular solids.
3. Density
Definition: Density (ρρ) is defined as mass per unit volume, describing how compactly matter is packed within an object.
Formula:
ρ=mVρ=Vm
Units:
SI Unit: Kilograms per cubic meter (kg m−3kgm−3).
Common Unit: Grams per cubic centimeter (g cm−3gcm−3).
Key Principles:
Pure water has a reference density of approximately 1.0 g cm−31.0gcm−3 (1000 kg m−31000kgm−3).
Density is an intensive property and does not depend on the amount of material present.
4. Buoyancy
Definition: Buoyancy is the upward force exerted by a fluid on an object immersed or floating in it.
Archimedes' Principle:
The buoyant force (FbFb) acting on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by that object.
Fb=ρfluid×Vsubmerged×gFb=ρfluid×Vsubmerged×g
where gg is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s29.8m/s2).
Floating and Sinking Criteria:
Floating: Occurs when average object density is less than fluid density (ρobject<ρfluidρobject<ρfluid).
Sinking: Occurs when average object density is greater than fluid density (ρobject>ρfluidρobject>ρfluid).
Neutral Buoyancy: Occurs when object density equals fluid density (ρobject=ρfluidρobject=ρfluid
