Introduction to Heat and Temperature
Heat
Definition: Heat is the transfer of energy from one point to another due to a temperature difference.
Temperature
Definition: Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold a body is.
It expresses the degree of coldness or hotness.
Measurement Units:
Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (°C), degrees Fahrenheit (°F), or Kelvin (K).
Heat Flow
Direction of Heat Flow:
Heat energy always flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature.
Example: Given two points A and B, where point A is at a temperature of 95°C and point B is at 96°C, the heat will flow from point B to point A until they reach thermal equilibrium.
Equilibrium Condition:
Heat flow will stop when the temperature at point A is equal to the temperature at point B.
Factors Affecting Heat Transfer
The heat transfer process depends on the following factors:
Mass of the Material: The amount of heat absorbed or released is dependent on the mass of the material involved.
Material Type: Different materials conduct heat at different rates.
Temperature Difference: The greater the temperature difference between two points, the more rapid the rate of heat transfer will be.
