Defining Human Geography
Geography is the study of places and the relationship between people and their environments.
Physical geography focuses on the natural world, including mountains, rivers, climate patterns, and soils.
Human geography examines people and their distribution across the planet's surface. For example, while a physical geographer studies how a river carved a valley, a human geographer asks why a town grew on one bank versus the other and who controlled the bridges.
The spatial perspective distinguishes human geography from other social sciences. It asks where a phenomenon is happening, why it is happening there, how it is distributed across space, and how it interacts with neighboring places.
Space refers to the abstract, geometric area between or around objects.
Place is a specific location that has been given meaning by human experience. This transformation from space to place occurs at any scale, from a street corner to an entire nation.
Maps and Cartography
A cartographer is a person who creates maps.
Every map is a simplification and involves choices about what to include or leave out, reflecting specific priorities or political agendas.
Reference maps show geographic features to help readers identify and locate places. Examples include political maps (boundaries, cities), physical maps (natural features), road maps, and topographic maps (elevation via contour lines).
Thematic maps communicate a specific theme or subject. Common types include:
Choropleth Map: Uses color shading to show data values across regions, such as population density.
Dot Distribution Map: Uses dots to represent a specific quantity of a phenomenon (e.g., one dot = people).
Graduated Symbol Map: Uses symbols of varying sizes to show quantities.
Isoline Map: Connects points of equal value, often seen in weather temperature maps.
Flow-Line Map: Uses lines of varying widths to show the movement of people, goods, or ideas.
Cartogram: Distorts the size of regions based on a data variable. Area cartograms resize regions by data (e.g., countries sized by GDP), while distance cartograms distort space to represent travel time or effort.
Mental maps are internal, personal pictures of places. They are selective and distorted based on what the individual deems significant.
Distance, Location, and Scale
Absolute location is a precise, mathematical description of a point on Earth. It is most commonly expressed using latitude and longitude.
Latitude lines (parallels) run east-west and measure distance north or south of the Equator (0° to 90°).
Longitude lines (meridians) run north-south and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian (0°), which passes through Greenwich, England.
Relative location identifies a place based on its relationship to other places, affecting accessibility and economic opportunity.
Distance decay is the principle that interactions between places decrease as the distance between them increases.
Time-space compression is the idea that modern transportation and communication technologies have effectively shrunk the world, reducing the friction of distance.

Placelessness describes a condition where locations lack distinctive character, such as identical chain stores off highway exits.
Spatial distribution includes density (number per unit area), concentration (clustered vs. dispersed), and pattern (geometric arrangement).
Spatial interaction is the movement of goods, people, and ideas. It is driven by complementarity (one place having what another needs) and described by the gravity model, which states interaction is proportional to population size and inversely proportional to distance.
Sustainability involves balancing environmental protection, economic growth, and social equity.
Environmental determinism was a 19th-century theory claiming the natural environment determines human behavior; it is now discredited as a racist justification for colonialism.

Sociofacts are social institutions (e.g., governments, schools). Mentifacts are shared ideas and moral codes (e.g., religious convictions).
Cultural hierarchy: A cultural trait (single element like using chopsticks) combines into a cultural complex (related traits like a style of eating), which forms a cultural system (an integrated web of complexes).
Folk culture is traditional and practiced by small, isolated, rural groups. Popular culture is found in large, diverse, urban societies and spreads rapidly via media.
Cultural hearths are source areas of innovation. Ancient hearths include Mesopotamia (Tigris-Euphrates), the Nile Valley, the Indus Valley, the Yellow River Valley, and Mesoamerica. Modern hearths include Hollywood and Silicon Valley.
Cultural convergence occurs when cultures become more similar. Cultural divergence happens when groups emphasize their distinct identity against outside influence.
Cultural Landscapes (Carl Sauer): The visible imprint of human activity on the land. Examples include the rectangular grid of the American Midwest (Land Ordinance of 1785) and long-lot farm patterns in Quebec.
Sequent occupance is the concept that successive societies leave layers of their culture on a place, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, which has transitioned between church and mosque.
Language and Religion
Language families share a common ancestor (proto-language). Indo-European is the largest family (English, Hindi, Russian).
Dialects are regional varieties of a language. Max Weinreich famously noted, "A language is a dialect with an army and a navy."
Lingua Franca: A common language used for communication between speakers of different native tongues (e.g., English in global business).
Pidgin: A simplified contact language with no native speakers. When a pidgin becomes a community's first language, it is a creole.
