Brain Damage:
⁃ Tumors
a. Malignant: cancerous, can spread to other parts
b. Benign: non-cancerous, tend to grow more slowly, do not spread. Puts pressure on the brain.
⁃ Stroke: disruption of blood supply to the part of the brain leading to injury
a. Ischemic: clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain
b. Hemorrhagic: blood vessel ruptures
⁃ Aneurysm: weakened artery wall that can bulge and rupture, can occur in other parts of the body.
Lateralization of the Cortex:
⁃ Contra-laterally: left side, right side
Cerebral Cortex:
⁃ Occipital Lobe: Eyes
a. If damaged, hallucinations, can’t track eyes, can’t see colors properly, cortical blindness.
⁃ Parietal Lobe: Sense of Self
a. Sensory information, touch, temp, pain, manipulation of objects, somatosensory cortex
b. Language processing
c. If damaged, mess up how you perceive things
⁃ Temporal Lobe: Auditory Cortex
a. If damaged, impairment of language comprehension
⁃ Frontal Lobe: Conscious Thought
a. Decision making
b. If damaged, Phineas Gage, teenagers
