Solutions and Concentrations
Solutions and Concentrations
- Water is the universal solvent:
- Most substances, especially polar and ionic compounds, can dissolve in it.
- Solutes:
- Substances that are dissolved in a solvent (typically water).
- Concentration:
- The amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent (water).
- Higher concentration: more solute dissolved.
- Lower concentration: less solute dissolved.
- Osmolarity:
- A way to measure concentrations in the body.
- Label: mOsm.
- Concentrations in the medical field:
- Solutions may be measured as a percentage.
