Solutions and Concentrations

Solutions and Concentrations

  • Water is the universal solvent:
    • Most substances, especially polar and ionic compounds, can dissolve in it.
  • Solutes:
    • Substances that are dissolved in a solvent (typically water).
  • Concentration:
    • The amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent (water).
    • Higher concentration: more solute dissolved.
    • Lower concentration: less solute dissolved.
  • Osmolarity:
    • A way to measure concentrations in the body.
    • Label: mOsm.
  • Concentrations in the medical field:
    • Solutions may be measured as a percentage.
