Karina Garcia: Abigail
Born and raised in Texas, attended Texas A&M. Worked in the university's news organization. Holds a BA in English and Digital Journalism. Graduated college in 2022. Worked closely with her mentor, a CNN correspondent, and tirelessly sent her reels to every news director in the Texas starter markets.
She even received several awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association for her television announcing during college career.
Garcia began her career with KAVU-TV as an anchor, reporter, and producer. Focused on pursuing hard-hitting, community-based stories.
Her schedule was hectic, including overtime and late-night shifts. Served as a weekend anchor and weekday reporter.
Started her day at 9am researching captivating Hampton Roads news stories. Attended a pitch meeting at 9:30.
When selecting stories, make sure you have several people willing to talk to you on camera. Head out to the field to gather B-roll, shoot interviews, and gather her story. Then, she spends about an hour writing her story.
FOCUS ON GIVING SMALLER COMMUNITIES A VOICE
A PERDOMINANTLY SPANISH SPEAKING COMMUNITY
MUCH OF THE COMMUNITY SHE GREW UP IN DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH AND DID NOT HAVE A VOICE IN LOCAL NEWS
AND SO SHE WENT FOR TESOL
SHE MAY TEACH ENGLISH TO NON-native speakers
Eventually got detectives and investigators involved through her investigation in a small community.
Her advice
Take YOUR INTERNSHIPS SERIOUSLY
PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD ALWAYS
PUT TOGETHER A SOLID REEL OF YOUR WORK DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP
SEND SEND SEND YOUR REL TO EVERY NEWS DIRECTOR IN THE STARTER MARKET
PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

everybody my name is Abigail porterie I did my newsmaker on Karina Garcia so this is the life of a newsmaker Karina Garcia Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and there should be working in her University's news organization where she was a producer she was a news anchor and she also wrote a lot of stories and said a lot of English and she also decided to pursue digital journ 2022 with her Bachelor of Arts so her passion continue to evolve especially on living she first really broke out into the industry because she worked closely I have the opportunity to have a mentor who was also a CNN correspondent and she had the opportunity to have a lot of her newsreels and her packages and clean up to where she knew what she needed to fix and start and she also counted after she graduated to break herself into he told me that she was born alive she said the word annoying with how many instructors she emailed all of her reels to every news director and all the Texas Star markets so if you were fine and her college career she even received several awards from the Texas Intercollegiate press Association for television and television announcing see the local there and there's actually a photo of her I found online working news organization breakout role to give a career with hey Google and a producer as well and she really wanted to focus on local hard-hitting to stories he didn't mention that her schedule was very overwhelming very time-consuming it also kind of goes back into Jay's presentation where relocation was something that she had to do what does her at kaam TV in South Texas 28010 and Beyond reporter but she is a weekday weekend anchor weekday reporters excuse me so her work is going to look a little bit something like this which is not really similar to like the kind of 9 we learned from interviews maker is all the times you're working weekends you're working nights address from 3 to 11:30 so a typical day for Karina Garcia when she is you recording make sure you have several people willing to talk to you on camera if you interview individuals in the community comma is able to hit focus on is that digital media is becoming so incredibly important with social media and articles online so she has to make sure that her story is transferable to an so this takes her approximately an hour level five I meant out here is a photo of heart in the field she got to throw the first pitch before the typing here I want to show just a couple of photos of her and action so I have a couple on their minute and a half of your time platforms so this is also going to be creative Garcia really kind of emphasized to me about use your social media be present on social media and make sure that you're kind of loud and excited and energetic about the work that you're doing this is actually all of these photos right here this is the anger desk where we got to see at the studio this is also her with I believe that's your adopted daughter isn't it so and then here is her in the production room so I also include these photos I thought it was really cool to kind of see like this isn't just something where I am looking at like these people are in these rooms doing their jobs let's talk about the duality of kar hydralazine she really wants to focus on getting smaller communities of weights I said she often watch a lot watch a lot of serious and traumatic events happening in our community and often with the language barrier and a predominantly Spanish speaking of community on these events and you know traumatic happens when unnoticed at the Collegiate level level three and a reason for becoming or loving to become a reporter 301 on a story in South Texas where a Texan woman was having her 1 year anniversary of going mixed missing Hispanic and Spanish-speaking Community where there wasn't a lot of native English speakers or the no English Karina Garcia decided to take on the story and go through the investigation so through this she discovered that the husband was actually a suspect in a key suspect and then disappear she found with investigators of course new new evidence in the case that came forward she actually knowing Spanish and having the ability to it will work closely with a woman's brother and was able to kind of spearhead the investigation because of her ability to speak Spanish give these marginalized communities a voice border at k a b u TV that was able to speak and translate Spanish so she took the initiative to report the story and threw her reporting this story erupted in this texting community outrage that eventually got investigators and detectives looking into the story and finding a the eventual death of a Woman by her husband and domestic violence it really taught her a sense of humanity because oftentimes we were 40 forget these that's an example of what they certification looks like I'm interested in something you'd rather be doing but it's important to make the emphasis that you're going to make that interest and show other people that this is your passion and this is what you want to do put in your best foot forward always like I said a story could be dull you could be doing something better but always do your best work and through these internships put together so something that for university has told me is that if you put your best foot forward and you're never afraid to put yourself out there you can make those pictures what year was really great to talk to you she was very excited and very excited to kind of work with me here so something that I want to leave you off with and something that was really encouraging to me as someone who experiences imposter syndrome a lot do your best and work hard because there will be someone that will take you with what do you think what do you think about her her commitment to giving people a voice in the community I really thought it was something that like kind of goes into Humanity how the quarters often really forget like the power of the reporting in the power of Journalism so I thought it was something really special because you know living and they have I'll have a lot of predominantly Spanish-speaking countries or communities not countries journalism can give these voices and also kind of brought I'm currently Al spoke to me in that sense because I'm on my night here in Spanish and it also kind of made me realize that I had the ability to go Broad and go wider with my stories and I don't have to stick to just one set area you can go brighter you can go brighter not bright so I did a lot of research when starting my college bilinguality is not a must but you know preferred because I took I started Spanish in 8th grade and now I'm a junior college still taking it so I asked me if I have something that I really wanted to pursue to try to make myself stand out in the news world and also kind of show that I also like Karina Garcia can have Duality I can do a lot of different stories on capable and I am you know ready to make a change and also be the change we have a lot of middle school high school teachers who take that and use in class and stuff like that but just so you know which I love that part okay thank you thank you Google
