Overview

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Center (MLK Center) at Sacramento State established Fall 2015

  • Cornerstone for supporting African-American students and anyone interested in African-American heritage

  • Mission: foster \textit{belonging, holistic success, lifelong improvement} inspired by Dr. King’s vision

  • Partners with local businesses & community groups to strengthen college–career connections

Purpose & Goals

  • Provide safe, culturally affirming space on a predominantly white campus

  • Address non-academic needs (mental, financial, food security) to boost retention & graduation

  • Encourage networking, leadership, and community engagement

  • Promote generational wealth and long-term well-being

Core Programs & Services

  • Black Students in STEM – guidance toward engineering & science fields

  • SYNC (mental wellness) – peer counselors, one-on-one & group sessions

  • Sankofa Talks – open discussions on Black culture, policy, academic issues

  • Financial Wellness – monthly workshops with Chase Bank & Bank of Montreal; topics: budgeting, credit, homeownership

  • Melody Mondays – weekly IG video listing upcoming events/clubs

  • Leadership & Career Development – skills training, networking, civic engagement

  • Affirming the Dream Week – retreat for new & transfer students to meet Black faculty, staff, & orgs

  • Black Joy Events – social & cultural celebrations

  • Additional resources: food pantry, lounge, study rooms, advising, collaboration with Black Student Union & Divine Nine

Historical Context

  • Post-1968 Black student protests highlighted alienation on PWIs

  • 1966 formation of Black Panther Party; 1965 Higher Education Act expanded access

  • Cultural centers emerged to meet identity, support, and advocacy needs
