Types of Government

Anarchy

  • No government, order, justice, or law.
  • Usually occurs when a government fails due to mismanagement, corruption, or rebellion.
  • A "Failed State" describes the existence of anarchy.

Authoritarianism

  • One political party controls all political functions for their benefit.
  • Example: China, where the Communist Party controls government processes at all levels.

Democracy

  • Government controlled by the people.
  • Decisions are made by majority vote (pure democracy).
  • Historically, pure democracies can devolve into dictatorships due to lack of participation or by ceding power.

Oligarchy

  • Government controlled by a small group for their political, social, and economic benefit.
  • Example: Russian Republic, where the President and members of the oligarchy control political, economic, and social outcomes.
