Quadrants of the Abdomen

Anatomical Overview of Abdominal Quadrants

Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)

  • Liver: right lobe of the liver is located here.

  • Gallbladder: situated in the RUQ, involved in bile storage.

  • Stomach: particularly the pylorus, the lower section connecting to the duodenum.

  • Duodenum: comprises parts 1 through 3 of the small intestine, significant in nutrient absorption.

  • Pancreas: the head of the pancreas is found in this quadrant, essential for digestive enzyme secretion and insulin production.

  • Right Suprarenal Gland: responsible for producing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.

  • Right Kidney: located in the posterior part of this quadrant; plays a key role in filtering blood and waste removal.

  • Right Colic (Hepatic) Flexure: the bend of the colon near the liver.

  • Ascending Colon: superior part of the ascending colon is within this quadrant.

  • Transverse Colon: the right half is positioned here.

Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)

  • Liver: left lobe of the liver is situated in this quadrant.

  • Spleen: an organ involved in blood filtration and immune response.

  • Stomach: the overall body of the stomach is present in this quadrant.

  • Jejunum and Proximal Ileum: initial sections of the small intestine, involved in nutrient absorption.

  • Pancreas: encompasses the body and tail of the pancreas.

  • Left Kidney: located similarly to the right kidney but in the left area; plays a crucial role in renal function.

  • Left Suprarenal Gland: similar functions to the right gland, located in the left side.

  • Left Colic (Splenic) Flexure: the bend of the colon near the spleen.

  • Transverse Colon: the left half is organized here.

  • Descending Colon: superior part located in this quadrant.

Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)

  • Cecum: the beginning of the large intestine.

  • Vermiform Appendix: a tube-shaped sac attached to the cecum, associated with immune function.

  • Most of Ileum: the latter part of the small intestine.

  • Ascending Colon: inferior part situated here.

  • Right Ovary: contains follicles that produce eggs in females.

  • Right Uterine Tube: connects the ovaries to the uterus.

  • Right Ureter: abdominal part responsible for urine transport from the kidney to the bladder.

  • Right Spermatic Cord: abdominal part, contains vessels and nerves serving the testes.

  • Uterus: if enlarged, can be found in this quadrant.

  • Urinary Bladder: if very full, can also be located here.

Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)

  • Sigmoid Colon: part of the large intestine leading to the rectum.

  • Descending Colon: inferior part located here.

  • Left Ovary: analogous functions to the right ovary.

  • Left Uterine Tube: complements the right uterine tube in function and location.

  • Left Ureter: abdominal part serving similar purpose as the right ureter.

  • Left Spermatic Cord: abdominal part containing vessels and nerves for the left testis.

  • Uterus: enlarged status still applicable in this quadrant.

  • Urinary Bladder: can be found if very full.
