Sunny 16 – Rapid Outdoor Exposure Estimation

  • Purpose
    • Provide a meter-free starting exposure for daylight scenes; trains the eye to judge light levels.
    • Works only for daylight / direct-sun scenarios; once you have a meter reading you can depart from it.
  • Core rule (memorize)
    • Sunny  f/16@  1/ISO\text{Sunny}\;\Rightarrow f/16@\;1/ISO
    • Variations as ambient light decreases:
    • Partly Cloudy: f/11@1/ISOf/11@1/ISO
    • Overcast: f/8@1/ISOf/8@1/ISO
    • Heavy Overcast: f/5.6@1/ISOf/5.6@1/ISO
  • Shutter speed selection
    • Use the nearest shutter speed to your ISO value (e.g., ISO 100 → 1/125s1/125\,\text{s}; ISO 400 → 1/500s1/500\,\text{s}).
  • Why it matters
    • Builds intuitive understanding of the Exposure Triangle (aperture ↔ shutter speed ↔ ISO).
    • Helpful when the meter is fooled (e.g., back-lit, specular highlights) or fails (battery, extreme cold).

Equivalent-Exposure Workflow (Changing Aperture, Shutter, ISO)

  • After establishing a Sunny-16 starting point, move through reciprocal settings to serve creative intent.
  • General principle: one stop tighter in aperture ⟹ one stop slower in shutter (or ISO) to keep exposure constant.

Example 1 – Heavy Overcast, ISO 400

  • Starting point (rule): f/5.6@1/500f/5.6@1/500.
  • Goal: More depth of field (DOF).
    • f/8@1/250f/8@1/250
    • f/11@1/125f/11@1/125
    • f/16@1/60f/16@1/60
    • f/22@1/30f/22@1/30 (caution: 1/301/30 may introduce hand-held blur).

Example 2 – Bright Sun, ISO 100

  • Base exposure: f/16@1/125f/16@1/125.
  • Goal: Freeze fast-moving kids on bikes.
    • f/11@1/250f/11@1/250
    • f/8@1/500f/8@1/500
    • f/5.6@1/1000f/5.6@1/1000 ← sharpest (fastest shutter).

Exposure Compensation (EC)

  • Definition: Deliberately biasing the meter’s chosen exposure value.
  • Not needed in full Manual with incident-meter readings (you are already “compensating”).
  • Needed in P / Av / Tv / A / S modes because the meter averages entire scene.
  • Typical EC range: ±2\pm2±3stops\pm3\,\text{stops} in 1/21/2 or 1/31/3-stop steps.

Dialing EC

  • EC (1,2)(−1, −2) → makes the image darker by 1 or 2 stops.
  • EC (+1,+2)(+1, +2) → makes the image brighter by 1 or 2 stops.
  • Camera display often shows small increments (e.g., −0.3 = 1/3 stop).
  • Always consult the camera manual for the exact button / dial combination.

Overexposure Scenarios

  • Occurs when large dark areas fool the meter (stage, night scene, spot-lit subject).
  • Meter raises exposure to render dark areas mid-gray → highlights blow.
  • Fix: Dial EC = −2 (or test −1, −1.3, −1.7, −2) to under-expose relative to meter and preserve subject detail.
  • Real-world example: night fountain – EC at −1.3 EV restored highlight texture in water jets.

Underexposure Scenarios

  • Happens when bright background dominates (back-lit, sky behind, windows indoors).
  • Meter lowers exposure to protect highlights → subject rendered too dark.
  • Solution: EC = +1 … +2 EV to lift subject exposure, accepting some background washout.
  • Example: engagement couple against sky – +2 EV brightened faces; blown sky considered acceptable.

Filter Factors (FF) & Exposure Loss

  • Any filter aside from clear / protective (1A Skylight) absorbs light → needs compensation.
  • Filter Factor (FF): numeric multiplier printed on rim or datasheet.
    • 2×2\times1 stop (open aperture, slow shutter, or double ISO)
    • 3×3\times → **1\tfrac{1}{3}\,\text{stop}
    • 4\times → 2 stops
    • 8\times → 3 stops
    • 16\times → 4 stops
  • Practical methods to regain light:
    • Aperture: e.g., f/8\to f/5.6 (one stop wider).
    • Shutter: e.g., 1/250\to1/125.
    • ISO: e.g., 100\to200.

Bracketing – Insurance for Difficult Light

  • Concept: shoot multiple frames at different exposures to hedge against meter error.
  • Manual method (vary shutter, hold aperture):
    • Determined exposure: f/8@1/125.
    • Bracket: f/8@1/60(brighter),(brighter),f/8@1/125(nominal),(nominal),f/8@1/250 (darker).
  • Alternative (vary aperture, hold shutter):
    • f/5.6@1/125,,f/8@1/125,,f/11@1/125.
  • AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing): many cameras automate above; check menu.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) Capture

  • Rationale: Human eye ≫ single-frame sensor in highlight/shadow range.

In-Camera HDR

  • Camera fires 3 shots: normal, +\text{EV},,−\text{EV}$$.
  • Merges to one JPEG with expanded tonal detail.
  • Options (model-dependent): bracket width (1–3 stops), auto alignment, saving source files.

Manual HDR Workflow

  1. Bracket exposures on tripod; hold aperture constant to avoid DOF shift.
  2. Capture more than 3 frames if needed (e.g., −3, −2, −1, 0, +1, +2, +3 EV).
  3. Import to HDR software (Photoshop, Lightroom, Photomatix, etc.).
  4. Fine-tune tone mapping, de-ghosting, highlight compression.
  • Best with minimal subject movement (avoid running animals, fast clouds).
  • Provides greater control vs. in-camera (curve shaping, local contrast, color).

Integration with the Exposure Triangle

  • Aperture (f-stop): controls DOF & light.
  • Shutter Speed: freezes or blurs motion & light.
  • ISO: sensor sensitivity; affects noise & light.
  • Tools discussed (EC, filters, bracketing, HDR) all manipulate or compensate within this triangle.

Practical / Ethical / Real-World Notes

  • Ethical: avoid over-processing HDR so scene looks unnatural unless stylistic intent is clear to viewer.
  • Practical: always balance creative need (subject, story) with technical perfection (e.g., accept blown sky to expose faces).
  • Professional workflow tip: chimp (review on LCD with histogram) after each bracket set; confirm no clipping.
