Overview of Cantonese Finals
Cantonese has 51 plus 2 finals.
Finals can consist of vowel encoders.
A single vowel sound is called a monophthong.
Combinations of two vowel sounds are known as diphthongs.
Vowels can be followed by:
Nasal consonants: m, n, ng
Stop consonants: p, t, k
Grouping of Finals
Finals are divided into 9 groups based on vowels.
Double A Finals
Pronounced as double a.
Memorizing and reproducing the final sounds is the goal.

Single A Finals
Vowel a (pronounced as a).

Vowel E Finals
Vowel e (pronounced as e).
Example:

z (means know/understand).
Sentence: Find the character with vowel e.
Examples: it, eat.
Vowel O Finals
Vowel o (means matrimony) in Cantonese.
Group of characters:
Examples: grapes, go.
Vowel U Finals
Vowel u (similar to English u).
Example:
Characters:
husband
Sentence: Find the character with u.
Examples: own, food.
Two Syllabic Nasals
Unique character representing nasal sounds in Cantonese.
Frequently used in daily conversations.
Many negation words start with m.
Example of negation: adding m in front of adjectives and verbs.
