type of art revolves around the feelings and thoughts of the artist, and messages to his/her audience. It is characterized by being conceptual, innovative, expressive, and experimental compared to traditional art

Development Of The Philippine Arts Comes In The Three Major Traditions

Ethnic Tradition

the purpose of art is integral to life. Arts reflected the pagan beliefs and practices, everyday activities such as fishing and farming, and specific decorative art patterns in the community.

Spanish Colonial Art Tradition

  

Art forms were primarily influenced by religion and secularization. In this time, Spaniards used arts to propagate the Catholic faith.

American Colonial

to the practice of art from 1860s to 1960s. the main theme of art works in this time is national identity.

  

Elements of Art

Value – this refers to the lightness and darkness of color

Texture- In visual arts, texture is the element that appeals to our sense of feel on things

Space- In visual arts, space pertains to emptiness, which may either be positive space or negative space. 

Rhythm- This refers to the repetition of certain elements to produce a pattern

Triadic – uses three colors that are of equal distance from each other.  

Tetradic – also known as a double complementary color scheme, this uses two pairs of complementary colors.

Arts in its Different Forms

Performing Arts- This form of art may be purposive of entertaining the audience which may include dance, theatre, music, mime and opera.

Music- an art form that involves the creative use of sound to express insights and emotions

Dance- is an expression represented by sequenced by body movement

Theatre or theater- is a collaborative art where performers act out a real life or imagined story with their speech, dance, music and movements.

Film is a form of visual art used to imitate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, or feelings with the use of moving images.

PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ARTIST

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts or NCCA in the Philippines is the overall policy-making body, coordinating and granting agency for the preservation, development and promotion of the arts and culture of the Philippines

Proclamation No.1001 dated April 27, 1972 the Order of the National Artist Award (Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining was established.

Qualifications for the National Artist Award 

1. Living artists who are natural-born Filipino citizens. 

2. The content and form of their work have procured in building a Filipino sense of nationhood. 

3. An artist who has developed a mode of creative expression or style and living a legend on succeeding generations of artists. 

4. An artist who manifest excellence in the practice of their art form 

5. The artwork made has attained international and national recognition.




National Artist

Fernando Amorsolo (May 30, 1892 – April 24, 1972) Amorsolo is the first National Artist in the country and was known for using backlighting techniques in painting, making his creations bright and cheerful. 

Carlos “Botong” Francisco (November 4, 1912 – March 31, 1969) Francisco revived the art of murals and was considered to be the most distinguished mural painter for about three decades and was known for using historical events as subject matter for his murals. 

Guillermo E. Tolentino (July 24, 1890 – July 12, 1976) Honored as National Artist for Sculpture in 1973 and was known for designing the seal of the Republic of the Philippines, and the gold and bronze medals for the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Tolentino’s works include the “UP Oblation”

Napoleon V. Abueva (January 26, 1930) He is skillful in creating both representational and modern abstract sculptures using a wide variety of materials

Abdulmari Asia Imao (January 14, 1936 – December 16, 2014) Imao was instrumental in popularizing the ukil, sarimanok and naga motifs in the country as original Filipino creations. 

Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (June 6, 1932 – February 2, 2011) Alcuaz was mainly known for his oil and acrylic paintings, and sketches in ink, pencil, and watercolor. 

Levi Celerio (April 30, 1910 – April 2, 2002) Celerio is most known for his recognition as the only man who could play music with a leaf in the Guinness Book of World Records.

FESTIVALS

Pahiyas Festival- is celebrated on May 15, when the locals of Lucban decorate their houses extravagantly with vibrant and lively colors and celebrate the Harvest season

Giant Lantern Festival- San Fernando Pampangga_considered the Christmas Capital of the Philippines

Panagbenga Festival-Considered as one of longest festivals in the Philippines and is celebrated throughout the month of February

Moriones Festival- festival lasts for a week in Marinduque and celebrates the life of St. Longinus, whose eye was healed by the blood of Christ.

Masskara Festival-is celebrated in the City of Smiles, Bacolod City, where people wear colorful smiling masks decorated with feathers, flowers, and native beads

Pintados Festival-festival showcases the rich culture and colorful history of the province of Leyte

Local Materials

Ratttan- Naturally renewable palm belonging to the subfamily Calamoideae of climbing palms that is widely used as furniture.

Capiz- material comes from the windowpane oyster and is used for various artistic applications like windows, lanterns, and walling.

Abaca- material is also called Manila hemp, is extracted from the leaf sheath which is related to the banana plant and has the scientific name, Musa Textilis

Production Planning

Methods – The framework or step-by-step procedure used as a guide for the whole production.

Materials – The artwork or artistic content presented in a production, such as script, music and lyrics, or choreography.

Machine – The mediums, machinery, tools, or equipment used in a production, such as stage lighting and sound systems.

Manpower – The team of people assigned to specific roles in a production, such as directors, choreographers, dancers, artists, and crew.

Objectives – The goals or expected results of the production. They should be SMART and written in infinitive form.

SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Specific – Uses concrete action verbs and clearly states what should be done.

Measurable – Has quantifiable metrics that can be used to measure success.

Attainable – Realistic and possible to achieve based on available resources.

Relevant – Has a significant impact on the production.

Time-bound – Has a specific time or period for achieving the objective.

Concept Writers – Responsible for putting the entire plan into writing, developing the concept and script, and turning the theme into a narrative.

Director – The overall supervisor of the team who turns the concept and script into reality.

Choreographer – Designs and arranges the dance steps and movements and makes sure the choreography matches the theme.

Actors/Performers – Perform their assigned roles and follow the instructions of the director or choreographer.

Backstage Crew – In charge of the practical matters involving the show, including props, lights, sounds, costumes, and makeup.

Medium – The materials used by an artist to create an artwork and convey a message.

Mastery – The artist’s skill and rich knowledge of an art technique.

Criticism – Sharp or severe disapproval of something, generally based on perceived faults or errors.

Affordability – The quality of an art material being within the artist’s financial capacity.

Infinitive – The grammatical form “to + verb” used when writing objectives.

Production Team – A group of people who work together to create a production, with each member having a specific role and responsibility.
