⭐️The Nuremberg Rallies
* Hasn’t been asked directly in years
Intro: Background info on the nazis rise to power and the changing poli5cal climate in Germany, first march in 1923 before the Nazis come to power. Nuremberg “the most german of all German cities” (Hitler) with links to old Holy Roman Empire (the first reich in hitlers eyes)
Precession to the rally’s: rally’s proceeded by a performance of Wagner at the opera, and a party roll for those who had died ( glorifying it, almost a religious aspect). Events were flashy and all about the power the Nazis had in terms of grandeur
1933 ‘Rally of Victory’: the celebration of the nazis coming into power, huge turnout, Goebbels preaches about the evils of Judaism. Triumph of faith premiers (quickly destroyed after the cull of the SA and Röhm). Nazi decorum on full display
1934 ‘Rally of Unity and Strength’: rally is a week long, and hundreds of trains pour in from over Germany full of attendees. ’Triumph of the Will’ premiered to win awards. Very religious in tone and hitler considered a godlike figure. First rally after the Night of the Long Knives, Hitler all powerful.
1935 ‘Rally of Freedom’: mainly celebrating the abandonment of the Treaty of Versailles. The Nuremberg laws proclaimed; Jews lose citizenship and sexual relations are banned. Swastika made flag and Hitler meets either Emperor Hirohitos brother, securing relationship between the two countries.
1936 ‘Rally of Honour’: celebrating the remilitarisation of the Rhineland, hitler finally elevated to godlike status. 1 million people attend. Hitler denounces communism. Beginning of a more militaristic aspect of the rallies which reflects the mood in Germany at the time
1937 ‘Rally of Greater Labour’ and 1938 ‘Rally of Greater Germany’: reductions in unemployment and Hitler rejects communism. Anschluss and the Sudetenland crisis (Hitler uses his power to try and pressure the Czech government into giving up the Sudetenland). Final rally before ww2
Impact of the rallies: rallies showcased the grandeur of the nazi aesthetic, proved hugely beneficial in promoting the party ideologies and even when the tone shifted towards militarisation the hype stayed strong.
Conclusion: after the war, the allies hold the trials in nuremburg, demonstrating the true downfall of the nazis. High ranking n’a is who’d attended rallies now executed here
