Indictment 

criminal accusation that a person has committed a crime

Court-issued statement that formally charges an individual with crime

Discovery phase

Occurs when each side learns about the case and attempts to form its argument → interviewing witness

Pleadings 

Initial papers filed in a lawsuit that explain each side of the argument

Appeals 

After the trial has ended, one side asked for a review of the decision by pointing out errors in the reading

Appellate

Arbitration

Duress

exerting unreasonable pressure on someone to take specific action

Habeas corpus

legal petition, objection to imprisonment procedures and policies

Circumstantial evidence

data that is difficult to verify beyond a reasonable doubt

Eminent domain

law that allows the government to take private property for public use, but it must compensate the property owner

Injunction

a court order that states that a defendant must stop engaging in a specific activity. Prevent trade secrets

Non-compete contract 

agreement between an employee and his/her employer stating that s/he will not work for a competitor if the employee leaves the company or is fired

Antitrust

promote competition among businesses and prevent the formation of monopolies - make certain selling activities illegal

Full disclosure 

Exposure, transparency → financial statements or documents should include all the info that is necessary for documents to be understood

Legally binding contracts 

Clearly outline an agreement → disputes and litigation can be avoided
