Location

  • Why go on location?

    • To get your actors ready

    • Not building a set

    • Save a lot of money

  • What are some issues and safety concerns that exist on location?

    • Weather (Wind, wet, ice, dust storm, etc.)

The Location Scout & The Tech Scout

  • What are they

  • Why are they important

  • There are two types:

    • Location Scout: This is an initial pass to see if a location is even workable for the production

    • The Tech Scout: A very involved process that takes place much closer to the time cameras roll  Lo

      • Involves multiple departments: camera, grip, electric, production, production designer, sound, & transportation.

    • The Tech Scout con’t - Participants include:

      • Director, 1st AD, DoP, PD, Set Designer/Construction Manager, Gaffer, Key Grip, UPM, Sound Mixer, Transprtn captain, Screenwriter, among others.

Sound & prepping for location

  •  Practical Pitfalls of Location Work/When to consider shooting on a built set

    • Different SHooting Environments

    • Large Scale FX required (storm/fire/etc)

    • Difficult access to location (i.e., location is a penthouse apartment with no elevator access)

  •  When Searching got Location:

    • Always check to see if a location can be used for more than one thing

      • i.e., using one practical house location for more than one house in the script

      • i.e., using a warehouse space as is but also as a loft apartment for later in the script

      • i.e., a house location for both a house and a cafe setting
