IELTS Reading
/Prepare Yourself: Before skimming a passage, ensure you are in a quiet environment where you can concentrate. Have a pen or highlighter ready if you want to mark key points or notes as you skim.
/
Preview the Text: Look at the title, subheadings, and any visuals (charts, graphs, images) to get a general idea of the content and structure of the passage.
/
/
Read the First Paragraph: Focus on the first paragraph, as it often contains the main idea or thesis of the text. This sets the context for what you will be reading.
Scan for Keywords: As you move through the text, focus on content words (nouns and verbs) rather than filler words (and, the, is). Look for keywords or phrases that stand out and may indicate the main ideas.
Identify Major Points: Read the first sentence or two of each paragraph. These often encapsulate the main idea for that section. If a paragraph has a subheading, take note as it usually indicates what the paragraph will discuss.
Look for Transitions: Pay attention to transition words (e.g., "firstly," "however," "in addition") which can help you follow the flow of the argument and identify connections between ideas.
Summarize Key Information: As you finish skimming, quickly summarize the main ideas you gathered. Consider jotting down a few key points or themes.
Review and Reflect: After skimming, take a moment to reflect on what you have read. Ask yourself: What is the main topic? What are the key arguments or findings? This will enhance your overall comprehension and memory of the material.
