One Pager - Much Ado (8th Final)

Theme Statement & CER:

C/TS: In the play Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare demonstrates that deception can sometimes be used to serve as a necessary means to achieve a greater outcome.

E1: Throughout the plot, Shakespeare employs multiple ruses created by the characters to unite the two main couples together, including Beatrice and Benedick, who are fooled into believing that they love each other. In Act 2, Scene 3, Benedick hides in an arbor and overhears Claudio, Leonato, and the Prince, who asks, “Leonato. What was it you told me of today, that your niece Beatrice was in love with Signior Benedick?” which sparks Benedick’s interest. Little does he know, however, that the Prince has already seen Benedick hiding and has tricked him into believing Beatrice loves him.

R1: Later on in the play, Beatrice and Benedick eventually fall in love and truly show a sense of emotional intelligence and bonding towards each other. This shows how sometimes deceiving others can lead to a better outcome.
