CH 5 Notes (Alcohols & Alkyl Halides):
FROM TEXTBOOK:
(Alcohols & Alkyl Halides: Introduction to Reaction Mechanisms)
definitions:
functional group
mechanism
Notes:
-functional groups are responsible for the reaction the compound undergoes
-mechanism are the “HOW” the structure of the reactant is transformed in to the product
-”families” based on the functional group present
-two most important: alcohol & alkyl halides
-both versatile for starting materials and preparing other families
conversion of alcohol to alkyl halide (mechanism):

**the OH function group of alcohol is replaced by a halogen, such as chlorine or bromine
“R” stands for an alkyl group
-allows for more focus on the functional group
hydrocarbons = alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and arenes
-double bond is functional group in an alkene
-triple bond is functional group in an alkene
-benzeme ring is functional group in an arene
**Alkanes are not considered to have a functional group
