Cosmetology Theory - pH

pH - Potential Hydrogen

pH Function/Does

Measures acidity and alkalinity of a substance

  • pH represents the quantity of hydrogen ions

  • Range from 0-14

  • 7 is neutral

  • 0 to 6.9 is acid

  • 7.1 to 14 is alkaline

  • Logarithm means multiple of 10

  • pH of the hair and skin is 4.5 to 5.5

Alkaline on Hair - expands it, opens up cuticles.

Put neutralizer on after these services to close the cuticle up again.

Farther you move from 7 (neutral). Stronger/more acidic the product will get.

Fruits and Fruit Juices High in Acid

  • lemon juice (pH: 2.00-2.60)

  • limes (pH: 2.00-2.80)

  • blue plums (pH : 2.80-3.40)

  • grapes (pH: 2.90-3.82)

  • pomegranates (pH : 2.93-3.20)

  • grapefruits (pH: 3.00-3.75)

  • blueberries (pH : 3.12-3.33) (pH Testing Strip)

  • pineapples (pH: 3.20-4.00)

Alkaline Cleaning Products & Their pH

  • washing-up liquid (pH 8)

  • baking soda (pH 8)

  • hand wash (pH 9)

  • laundry detergent (pH 10)

  • all-purpose cleaner (pH 11)

  • oven cleaners (pH 13)

  • bleach (pH 13)

In Class Tests

  • Relaxer (pH 12)

  • Cholesterol Conditioner (pH 4)

  • Acetone (pH 7)

  • Hair Color Developer - (pH 4?)

  • Freeze and Shine Hairspray (pH 5??)

  • Bath and Bodyworks Body Lotion (pH 4)

  • Victoria Secret Body Spray (pH 4)
