Neuron Categories and Functionality
Categories of Neurons
Neurons can be categorized based on two criteria: functionality (physiological) and anatomy (shape).
Functional Types of Neurons
Sensory Neurons (Afferent Neurons):
Function: Carry messages into the Central Nervous System (CNS).
Location: Start at receptors located on the surface or internally and transmit information to the CNS.
Example: Detecting temperature through skin receptors.
Interneurons (Association Neurons):
Function: Process, think, and integrate information within the CNS.
Position: Located between sensory neurons and motor neurons.
Role: Facilitate communication between incoming sensory information and outgoing responses.
Motor Neurons (Efferent Neurons):
Function: Carry outgoing messages from the CNS to effectors (muscles or glands).
Example: After processing heat information, a motor neuron sends a command to sweat glands to cool the body down.

Interneuron: Located within the CNS, processes and integrates the received information.
Motor Neuron: Sends a signal from the CNS to an effector, such as a sweat gland.
Anatomical Types of Neurons
Neurons can also be categorized by their shape:
Multipolar Neurons:
Characteristics: Many extensions from the cell body, primarily dendrites.
Examples: Most motor neurons and many interneurons.
Key Term: "Multi" indicates multiple branches.
Bipolar Neurons:
Characteristics: Two extensions from the cell body—a single dendrite and a single axon.
Examples: Found in sensory organs such as the eyes, ears, and nose.
Key Term: "Bi" indicates two branches.
Unipolar Neurons:
Characteristics: One extension from the cell body that branches to form a dendrite and an axon.
Examples: Common in sensory pathways.
Key Term: "Uni" indicates one branch.

Functional Types of Neurons:
Sensory Neurons:
They bring messages into the brain and spinal cord.
They start at special places called receptors (like skin or nose).
Example: They can feel if something is hot or cold.
Interneurons:
They are helpers in the brain that process information.
They sit between the sensory neurons and motor neurons.
They help decide what to do with the information.
Motor Neurons:
They send messages from the brain and spinal cord to muscles or glands.
Example: When you touch something hot, they tell you to pull your hand back.
Anatomical Types of Neurons:
Multipolar Neurons:
They have a lot of branches.
These are found mostly in motor neurons and some interneurons.
Bipolar Neurons:
They have two branches: one to receive signals and one to send them out.
These are found in your eyes, ears, and nose.
Unipolar Neurons:
They have only one branch that splits into two.
These are mostly found in sending messages about feelings like touch.
