Introduction to Mesh Analysis

Mesh analysis is a circuit analysis technique that focuses on identifying and solving for mesh currents within a circuit. This method contrasts with nodal analysis, which seeks to find node voltages.

  • Node Voltage: Measured with respect to a designated ground or common reference point. For example, if a node voltage is 10 V10 \text{ V}, it means that node is 10 V10 \text{ V} higher than ground.

  • Voltage Across a Resistor: Measured from one side of the resistor to the other. This is a potential difference between two points, neither of which necessarily has to be ground.

In mesh analysis, if we know all the mesh currents, we can then easily calculate the voltages across individual components.

Loops vs. Meshes

  • Loop: Any closed path in a circuit. Starting from a node and returning to the same node without passing through any intermediate node or element more than once.
