Worldviews and Environmental Value Systems
Worldviews represent the broad lenses shaped by cultural beliefs, philosophical ideas, political opinions, and religious teachings through which groups see and interpret the world. Perspectives are more specific, situational viewpoints on particular issues that can evolve with new information.
An Environmental Value System (EVS) is a system that determines how an individual or group evaluates and acts on environmental issues. It operates with inputs (cultural, religious, social, political, economic, and environmental factors) that are transformed into outputs (perceptions, decisions, and actions).
Environmental perspectives are categorized into three main categories:
Ecocentrism: Prioritizes the intrinsic value of nature and ecosystems over human needs. It advocates for environmental preservation, resource restraint, systemic change, and the protection of biodiversity for its own sake.
Anthropocentrism: Places human beings at the center, valuing nature primarily for human benefit and economic advantage. It supports sustainable management but often leads to resource exploitation.
Technocentrism: Focuses on human ingenuity and technology to solve environmental issues. It assumes economic growth and continuous technological innovation can overcome resource limits without requiring major lifestyle changes.
Factors Influencing Perspectives
Perspectives are shaped by personal experiences, sociocultural norms, scientific understandings, laws, religion, economic conditions, and lived experience. Arguments are logical constructs presented to defend a perspective or counter an opposing viewpoint.
Perspectives change over time through government campaigns, non-governmental organization (NGO) initiatives, and demographic shifts:
Governmental milestones include the Clean Air Act in the UK (1956) and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US (1970).
Key NGOs include Friends of the Earth (1969) and Greenpeace (1971).
Behaviour-time graphs track changes in actions or lifestyle trends over time, such as tracking whale kills between 1900 and 1999 or tourist visits to Antarctica between 1992 and 2020.
The Environmental Movement
The environmental movement promotes sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and responsible resource management through activism, education, and policy.

Wangarı̃ Maathai: Founded the Green Belt Movement; advocated for tree planting, conservation, and women's rights.
Greta Thunberg: Led global youth climate strikes (Fridays for the Future) urging urgent climate action.

Environmental Values and Surveys
Values represent core principles guiding behavior and priorities. Value clashes create social tensions between individual freedoms and collective sustainability goals.
Value surveys measure public attitudes toward environmental issues:
Closed-ended questions: Provide fixed options ( rating scales, Likert scales) to generate quantitative data for statistical and trend analysis.
Open-ended questions: Provide qualitative descriptions for deeper insight into individual perspectives.
Longitudinal Data: Repeating surveys over time generates behaviour-time graphs to monitor progress toward sustainability goals and evaluate environmental policy effectiveness.
