Gross domestic product- the total number of money the U.S makes in a certain time period
How much money comes from Agriculture?
Despite agricultural taking up ⅔ of U.S land, it only makes up 1% of the U.S economy (GDP)
Within Agriculture how much does crops and animals make up in economic value?
50% Crops, 50% Animal AG.
How much money does beef make up within the animals Ag. and why is it substantially more?
Beef makes up to 18% in animal Ag. because it more expensive.
How much money does all Livestock commodities make up?
166 billion

9 billion Chickens, because they are smaller and in high demand.
What animals in lbs is slaughter the most?
Chickens, everything is a lot closer though and beef still wins from a money standpoint.
Why is livestock populated mainly in the central part of the U.S?
The Western part of the U.S is mainly desert, and there is more irrigated land in the central region.
What are the segments for the beef cattle industry?
Cow/calf- Feedlot- packer
Where is the beef cow inventory located? Why?
It's scattered across the U.S, mainly away from people.
What is the average cow herd size nationally?
About 42 head
What is different from the beef cattle industry compared to for example the chicken industry?
Beef cattle industry is very segmented, not vertically integrated, meaning there are multiple big companies that control the market, unlike in chickens where Tyson is 1 big company that controls the market.
What are feedlot cattle fed? Where are the feedlots located and Why?
High energy grain diets( corn) from weaning to harvest. Located in plains states near production of corn and grain, usually warm and dry climates
