Computer systems and system software
Computer- a programmable device that take in data process it into useful information and then outputs the information so it can be used
General purpose computers one devices that have a variety of uses the user chooses the task for the computer to complete
Embedded systems are more specialised, they can only do a limited number if things but they do them very well
CPU | Central Processing Unit | Brains of the computer It controls everything Large chip inside a computer |
RAM | Random Access Memory | Both readable and writable (you can get stuff from it and put stuff into it) Can add, change and delete data stored in RAM It is volatile- when the computer is switched off all of the data stored in RAM is lost It is fast to read/write |
ROM | Read-Only Memory | Non-volatile memory- it does not need power to keep the data inside of it It is also fast |
Hard drive |
| Contains multiple hard disks Main storage in your computer Operating system is also stored on the hard drive |
BIOS | Basic Input/Output system | Contains all your basic code for controlling your computer hardware When you start up your computer you may see a black screen displaying 'Press F2 for set up'. That is BIOS |
Operating systems = Windows, macOS, Linux, Android
