MODERN MATERIALS

modern materials are recently discovered materials from the last century artificially made from research and experimentation, normally when looking into enhanced properties

kevlar is made from aramid fibre woven into a fabric, it provides thermal protection (over 120 celsius) and due to how tightly the threads are woven it is very tough and impact resistant, making it suitable for stab-proof vests, it is five times stronger than steel. it was developed as an alternative to tyre reinforcements, it is impact resistant and can be used as a reinforcement for planes

polymorph is a modern material that can be reformed at a low temperature of 62 celsius, it is non-toxic and biodegraded able as it is made from organic material. it is used in orthodontic moulds and can be used to make handles that fit to a hand easily - improving ergonomics

precious metal clay is when precious metals are held in a non-toxic organic binder, it can be shaped by hand but used in jewellery, it shrinks in firing and the binding agent is burned off during firing. it is quick and easy to use and can be used in slip for PMC parts, it is more expensive than traditional materials and is not as strong as sterling silver

high density modelling foam is a lightweight and strong material that holds detail well, making it suitable for sculptures, it can be CNC milled or carved, it can be used in vacuum forming but needs to be painted to avoid sticking, it can also be used for mattresses and packaging
