Class Announcements
- Tomorrow is Fly Friday for those with the electric trailer.
- Next week on Tuesday, in-person class is scheduled.
- Note: There will be no in-person class on Thursday next week; it will be asynchronous online.
- Assignment posting will happen by Wednesday if not completed over the weekend.
Class Structure and Assignments
- Students need to complete assignments at their convenience before the following Tuesday class, ensuring adequate time for homework before Tuesday.
- Both classes the week after next will be in person.
Upcoming Homework Assignment
- Assignment: Find and summarize a video talk on meaningful life concepts.
- Nature of the Assignment:
- Source: TED Talk or similar presentations preferred.
- Duration: The video should be a minimum of 14-15 minutes. Acceptable range: 12-15 minutes.
- While watching, students should take careful notes. Using bullet points is appropriate.
- Summarization will be shared with a conversation partner in the following class.
- This exercise will be done three times over the next weeks, summarizing a differing viewpoint talk each time.
Guidance on Finding Videos
- Search using prompts like:
- "meaningful life"
- "fulfilling life"
- "good life"
- "happy life"
- Recommendations:
- Explore different cultural or religious perspectives to widen understanding (e.g., Hindu, Buddhist).
- Seek a balance of perspectives to create a diverse discussion.
Submission Instructions
- Open your Unit 3 Journal to record your findings.
- Insert a new heading labeled Meaning of Life Talks (in bold and underlined) beneath the second-to-last heading before the Capstone.
- Format notes to include:
- Identifying the speaker (name and brief description).
- Include a link to the talk.
- Personal notes and summaries from the talk.
- Aim for a thorough summary; more extensive notes will aid in detailed conversations with peers.
Discussion on TED Talk Exploration
- Suggestions include collaboration with peers on talk selection but avoid choosing the same video as your conversation partner.
- Video selection involves skimming multiple results to find the most engaging content.
Zen Buddhism Discussion
- Class will be supplemented by readings, particularly "Suzuki Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind.
- Students are instructed to read Mind Waves, specifically focusing on "Unfolding of Big Mind."
- Zazen defined as seated meditation.
