Basic Vehicle Operation

Steering Wheel (1)(1)

The steering wheel controls the front wheels, allowing the driver to direct the vehicle. Excessive speed can reduce steering control.

Some vehicles have an adjustable steering wheel for driver comfort. Refer to the owner's manual for details.

The shift lever is used to select a gear. It may be located on the steering column or on the console between the front seats.

Cruise control maintains a constant vehicle speed without the driver using the accelerator pedal.

The accelerator pedal, located to the right of the brake pedal, increases vehicle speed when pressed down.

Brake Pedal (6)(6)

Pressing down on the brake pedal slows or stops the vehicle. It also activates the brake lights.

Parking Brake (7)(7)

The parking brake keeps the vehicle stationary, especially when parked. It is often foot-operated or hand-operated.

Shift Indicator Positions

P (PARK)

Locks the transmission and prevents the wheels from turning. It is used when parking. Ensure the vehicle is fully stopped before shifting into park to prevent transmission damage.

R (REVERSE)

Used for backing up. When in reverse, white backup lights illuminate the path behind the vehicle at night, warning others of your intention to back up.

N (NEUTRAL)

Allows the wheels to turn freely without engine power. The engine can be started in neutral; useful if the engine stalls while moving.

D (DRIVE)

Used for most forward driving situations. The vehicle automatically shifts through the gears. Some vehicles have overdrive for fuel efficiency.

Lower Gears

Lower gears provide more power at the expense of speed. Use lower gears when towing or driving up steep hills to maintain control.

Devices for Safety, Communication, and Comfort

Safety Belts (9)(9)

Always wear your safety belt for protection against injury in a collision. Most areas require drivers and front-seat passengers to wear safety belts.

Head Restraints (10)(10)

Head restraints, padded devices on the backs of seats, help reduce whiplash injuries in a collision, especially in rear-end collisions.

Inside and Outside Rearview Mirrors (11,12)(11, 12)

The inside mirror shows the view through the rear window. Side mirrors show views to the sides and rear of the vehicle.

Horn (13)(13)

The horn is used to warn other drivers or pedestrians of your presence.

Hazard Flasher Control (14)(14)

Activates hazard flashers to warn others of a vehicle emergency.

Turn-Signal Lever (15)(15)

Activates turn signals to indicate intended turns or lane changes. Move the lever up to signal a right turn and down for a left turn. The signal usually cancels automatically after completing the turn.

Windshield Wipers and Washers (16)(16)

Windshield wipers clear the windshield of rain, snow, and debris. Washers spray fluid to help clean the windshield.

Light Switch (17)(17)

The light switch controls headlights, taillights, and instrument panel lights. It may be located on the dashboard or the steering column. The switch typically has settings for parking lights, headlights, and high beams.

Hood Release Lever (18)(18)

The hood release lever opens the vehicle's hood, allowing access to the engine compartment. It is usually located inside the vehicle, beneath the dashboard.

Comfort Features

Cruise Control

Maintains a selected speed.

Heater, Air Conditioner, and Defroster

Heating and air conditioning systems control cabin temperature. The defroster clears the windshield and windows of condensation.

Sun Visor

Sun visors, located above the windshield, reduce glare. Adjust to block sunlight, ensuring they don't point towards you in a way that could cause injury during a crash.

Seat Adjustment Lever

Adjusts seat position. In electric seats, controls are on the lower left side or the door.

Instrument Panel

The instrument panel contains gauges, warning lights, and a message center, positioned in front of the driver.

Important Vehicle Gauges

Monitor operational conditions and detect abnormal readings ASAP.

Fuel Gauge (1)(1)

Shows fuel level. Keep the tank at least half full in cold weather.

Temperature Light or Gauge (2)(2)

Warns when the engine coolant is too hot.

Oil Pressure Warning Light or Gauge (3)(3)

Indicates when oil is not circulating properly, but doesn't show oil level.

Alternator Warning Light or Voltage Meter (4)(4)

Indicates alternator issues. If the light illuminates, the alternator isn't charging the battery.

Brake Warning Light (5)(5)

Indicates parking brake engagement or low brake fluid/system issues.

Speedometer (6)(6)

Indicates vehicle speed in miles per hour (MPH) and/or kilometers per hour (km/h).

Tachometer (7)(7)

Measures engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM). Higher RPMs might indicate the need for upshifting or potential engine issues.

Odometer (8)(8)

Records total distance traveled. Some vehicles have a trip odometer, which can be reset for individual trips.

Antilock Braking System Light (9)(9)

Indicates ABS functionality. If it stays on, a system issue is present.

Safety Belt Light (10)(10)

Reminds occupants to fasten seatbelts.

Air Bag Warning Light (11)(11)

Confirms airbag system readiness. Illumination indicates a malfunction.

Turn-Signal Indicators (12)(12)

Show the direction of the active turn signal.

High-Beam Indicator (13)(13)

Indicates high-beam headlight activation.

Check Engine Light (14)(14)

Indicates engine issues; blinking light means it requires immediate attention. Consult a service technician for diagnosis.

Message Center

Provides important information like "check engine" or "low washer fluid".

Getting Ready to Drive

  • Have keys in hand.

  • Inspect around the vehicle.

  • Check for children.

  • Look for leaks or damage.

  • Check lights.

Getting into the Vehicle

Check surroundings before opening the door.

Adjust the seat and steering wheel for comfort and control. Maintain at least 10 inches between chest and steering wheel to avoid airbag injury.

Adjust mirrors and ensure all passenger put safety belt on before starting the vehicle.

Starting, Stopping, Steering, and Targeting

Starting the Engine
  1. Ensure parking brake is engaged.

  2. Shift lever to PARK or NEUTRAL.

  3. Foot on brake pedal.

  4. Turn ignition switch, releasing when engine starts.

  5. Check gauges and lights.

  6. Turn on headlights.

Hand Positions for Controlled Steering

Use 9:00 and 3:00 or 8:00 and 4:00 hand positions for better grip and control, avoiding airbag interference.

Use of Targets and the Steering Wheel

Steer accurately by focusing on a target in your path.

Hand-over-Hand Steering

Use for significant turns.

Hand-to-Hand Steering

For minor adjustments; prevents arm crossing, which is important when airbags are equipped.

Putting the Vehicle in Motion

Use a vacant parking lot for practice.

  1. Foot on the brake.

  2. Shift into DRIVE.

  3. Release parking brake.

  4. Check the path of travel and blind spots.

  5. Accelerate smoothly.

  6. Decelerate gradually.

Braking Control

Constant Braking Pressure

Apply steady pressure to activate ABS without locking wheels.

Normal Smooth Stop

Release some pressure just before a complete stop.

Hard, Smooth Stop

Apply maximum pressure without locking wheels; ease off slightly at the end.

Exiting the Vehicle
  1. Check location.

  2. Parking brake set.

  3. Turn off accessories.

  4. Release seat belt.

  5. Check for traffic before opening the door.

  6. Close door quickly, if necessary.

  7. Then walk around the rear of the vehicle, if um avoids facing oncoming traffic.

Locating Targets

Use reference points to align the vehicle within the lane.

Driving with a Manual Transmission

Purpose of a transmission is to convert engine speed into power to turn the wheels; greater power is needed from a stopped position.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Manual transmissions often have better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs. However, they require more driver involvement and can be challenging in stop-and-go traffic.

Semi-Automatic Transmission

Semi-automatic transmissions offer manual gear selection with automatic clutch operation. This replaces the clutch pedal with electronics.
