Narrative structure

1. Embedded narratives

→ Novel has more than one narrator; two major types:

  1. episodic novel with interpolated tales

    • subplots that often have little or nothing to do with main plot

  2. Nested structure

    • Main plot is narrated from a number of different perspectives

    • (Can be unreliable or have destabilising aspects)

2. Composite Narratives

  • Story is told through compilation of separate documents

  • e.g. diary entries, letters, legal documents, newspapers, narratives supplied by individual characters
