Community development = A voluntary or professional effort to support & develop the social and economic activity of a local community for the benefit of the community

Four main agencies:

• Local enterprise office

• SOLAS

• LEADER+

• Area Partnership Companies

Problems of local communities

• Unemployment (leads to higher emigration)

• Social problems (discourages investment)

• Poor infrastructure (discourages investment)

• Negative multiplier influences (poverty in the area has a negative knock-on effect and the areas are badly catered for by business)

• Local people are in control

• Advice & finance - enterprise in encouraged and helpful advice is laid on by local and national agencies
