Chile + Constitutions

  • Gabriel Boric (Chile’s President)

  • 2022 there were discussions of a new constitution, focusing on gender equality, the environment, indigenous rights, education, and animal rights

    • it puts the responsibility on the govt for fixing/helping climate change

    • it would require half of all govt + congress + public/private companies to be women

    • it would put the responsibility of eradicating gender-based violence on the govt

  • first, the constitution had 499 articles but it was whittled down to 388 + 57 to aid the transition (temporary articles)

  • the govt would include a “chamber of regions” with an upper house composed of elected delegates from each of Chile’s regions

  • this constitution failed, many did not feel represented largely due to the left leaning nature of the constitutional assembly

  • so then they made another one except the same thing happened but with right leaning people, the assembly was flooded with them so then the left didnt feel represented

the screw ups

  • first time around, delegates of the constitutional assembly were chosen by an OPTIONAL public vote and that resulted in only 43% voter turnout
