Aug 20 (Integrity Quiz Issues & Fraction Mastery: Quick Review) Part 2
Academic Integrity Quiz Issue
- A new Canvas Academic Integrity tool requires typing your name to acknowledge you read and agree with the terms.
- Some students reported their name being marked incorrect when submitting the quiz; issues vary and messages may not have gone through due to system changes.
- The instructor notes the tool is brand new and changes were made this year; not everyone is familiar with it yet; investigation and follow-up recommended.
- Students should check email and Canvas messages; continue with the lesson while issues are resolved.
Quick Fraction Review
- Converting whole numbers to fractions:
- When adding/subtracting with fractions, convert whole numbers to fractions with a common denominator.
- Example: 1−73=77−73=74
- Three-term addition/subtraction with denominators 3, 8, 6; find a common denominator (LCM): 24
- Convert: 32=2416,81=243,61=244
- Combine: 2416+243−244=2415=85
- Word problems: strategies and quick results
- Fraction not receiving an A in a class of 100: 100100−79=10021
- Product problem: if 1912×X=10, then X=191210=695
- Division by a fraction: Keep Change Flip (multiply by the reciprocal)
- Example: 10÷1912=10×1219=12190=695
- In algebra, you may leave an improper fraction if it cannot be reduced further (e.g., 695).
- Additional example: 1.2552=4552=5208
- Example: 70÷1914=95 (via reciprocal; final value can be an integer)
- Problem 5 worked example final result: 209
Practice Problems: Quick Solutions
- Problem 1 (multiplication with cancellation): Cancel common factors first, then multiply remaining numerators/denominators. Final answer: 3564.
- Problem 2: After simplifying, final result: 364.
- Problem 3: Find common denominator and combine; final result: 209.
Class Participation Tips
- Attending class and participating helps verify understanding; videos alone may miss gaps.
- If you cannot attend, try to engage asynchronously and use available Q&A; still, live interaction is valuable.
- Ask questions; the instructor will respond and gauge what you know.
- Access assignments and homework through Canvas/Hawks; extra bonus lessons available for extra points.
Next Steps
- Continue with Hawks homework for Lesson One R2 and R3; review lesson 1.6 on Friday.
- If you encounter quiz integrity issues, check email/Canvas and follow up with the instructor for clarification.
