On the Nature of Representation

1. Preliminaries

Representation: making present what isn’t literally present

Dual Roles of Elections:

  1. Selection— ability to choose like minded representatives (constituents)

  2. Accountability— to hold them responsible for their actions

Delegates: representative given instructions set by constituents to act in strict accordance with their interests

Trustees: representative given degree of latitude in decisions— trust placed in them by constituents to act in constituencies best interests even if it seems bad at the time
