American Redemptive Culture: American life stories heavily feature redemptive trajectories—moving from initial suffering, oppression, or sickness to eventual triumph, liberation, status, or salvation (e.g., Horatio Alger tales, American Dream, Christian atonement) (McAdams, 2013).
Psychological Well-being: High levels of mental health, generative behavior, and civic engagement strongly correlate with constructing personal life stories around redemptive arcs (McAdams et al., 1997, 2001; Walker & Frimer, 2007).
Cultural Limitations: Redemptive narratives can foster moral righteousness, unrealistic expectations that all suffering must yield reward, and cultural insensitivity toward non-redemptive experiences (McAdams, 2011, 2013).
Therapeutic Transformation: Restructuring one's narrative identity serves as the foundation for successful clinical psychotherapy, addiction recovery programs, religious conversions, and pivotal career transformations (Adler, 2012).
