Plan, Intentional Learning and Voice
Learning Intentions
Students will be able to:
- Identify the number of terms in an algebraic expression.
- Identify the variables and coefficients of the terms in an expression.
- Identify the constant terms in an expression.
- Evaluate an expression or formula by substituting values for each variable.
Success Criteria
- I can name and number the types of terms in an algebraic expression.
- I can evaluate an expression or formula by substituting values for given variables.
Work Requirements
- Complete section 2.2 Using Variables.
What is Algebra?
- Definition: Algebra is the study of generalised arithmetic, concentrating on how numbers, quantities, or values interact with each other.
- Example 1: A Demonstration of Generalised Arithmetic (Addition)
- The relationship can be expressed as: a + b = c.
- This indicates that when you add number one (a) to another number (b), the result is called the sum (c).
Usefulness of Algebra
- Provides tools for problem-solving in everyday life scenarios.
Key Vocabulary
- Students need to learn and be able to define and use key vocabulary associated with algebra to facilitate understanding and discussion throughout the unit.
Your Turn: Evaluation Tasks
Task 1
- Identify if the following is an expression or equation:
- Determine the number of terms.
- Identify the pronumerals/variables.
- What is the coefficient of ?3?
- What is the value of the constant?
- Key Vocabulary: expression, five, 2, 3, 2, 8
Task 2
- Repeat the task above for a new set of values:
- Key Vocabulary: expression, six, 2, 2, 1, 7, 1, -3
Example 1: Evaluation by Substitution
- Scenario: A store sells larger (
