    • Smaller size
    • Increased speed
    • Reduced cost
    • Decreased heat generation
  • Newer computers are more advanced than their predecessors.

First Generation (1945-1956)

  • Key Contributors: John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, who developed the first electronic computer at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946.
  • Primary Electronic Component: Vacuum tubes.
    • These tubes functioned as amplifiers and switches for electric signals, enabling weak signals to be amplified and controlling the flow of electricity.

    • First electronic computer developed in the United States.
    • Designed primarily for business and administrative tasks.
