Worldview and Sustainability

  • Definition of Worldview: A perspective on life, society, and institutions; an interpretive lens for understanding reality (Koltko-Rivera, 2004).
    • Components: Existential beliefs, evaluative beliefs, prescriptive beliefs (values).

Definitions of Sustainability

  • Definition 1: Prevention of Deprivation

    • Meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations (Brundtland Commission, 1987).
  • Definition 2: Non-Depletionary Use

    • Resource consumption at a rate no faster than regeneration.
  • Definition 3: Triple Bottom Line

    • Sustainability measured by environmental, economic, and social criteria.

Contrasting Worldviews

  • Separation vs. Connection with Nature:
    • Separate: Humans control nature.
    • Connected: Humans coexist with nature, emphasizing reciprocity in resource use.

Ecosystem Services and Sustainability
