Communication Skills & Public speaking routine

Sample Daily Routine

  • Morning (30-45 min):

    • Vocal Warm-up & Speech Practice (Improves clarity and diction)

      • Use speeko app or orai app for vocal warm ups

      • Use Elevate app for tongue twisters (enunciation)

      • For Speech practice, select a topic each day and practice giving a 2-3 minute impromptu speech. (Do after vocal warm up)

      • Habit: Do in front of mirror each morning to see facial expressions

    • Active Listening with Podcasts/Ted talks

      • Habit: Do while brushing teeth or during breakfast and pick a speaker to evaluate.

    • Set Daily Communication Goal for the day

      • E.g maintaining eye contact during conversations, reducing filler words like um and uh, etc.

      • Habit: Write goal down and keep in mind throughout the day during interactions

  • Afternoon (20-30 min):

    • Expand Vocabulary & Practice Non-verbal Communication

      • Learn 3- 5 new words or phrases each day and practice using them in sentences. (enriches communication and gives more ways to express ideas)

      • Habit: Use vocab app or flashcards. Integrate words into conversations or written communication.

      • Focus on improving body language and non-verbal cues. Stand in front of mirror and practice gesture, posture, and facial expressions. Try to convey emotion or a message without words.

      • Habit: Practice confident body language e.g maintain open stance and practice positive facial expressions (use speeko app)

  • Evening (30 min):

    • Reflect on Daily Conversations

      • Did I speak confidently? Was I clear and concise? Did I actively listen and respond appropriately?

      • Habit: Write down key takeaways and areas for improvement. Can do before bed or take time in day to journal reflections on communication throughout the day. Identify one thing to improve on for tomorrow.

    • Speech & Presentation Practice

      • Practice short presentation or speech on topc of interest. Record on video and review, focusing on eye contact, pace, and clarity. This builds public speaking confidence and allows for improvement.

      • Habit: Dedicate time in evening to practice speech. Simulate public speaking conditions such as standing, using gestures and projecting voice

  • Weekly Focus:

    • Public Speaking Simulation

    • Study Great Communicators

      • Watch speech from great public speakers (Ted talks, keynotes, etc) Analyze their language, speech structure, and audience engagement. Take notes on what makes them effective.

      • Habit: On weekends dedicate time to watch and learn from the best speakers in the world.

  • Other Daily Habits

    • Mindfulness and Breathing Exercises

      • Works on controlling nerves and calming yourself before speaking.

    • Read Aloud

      • Choose passage from book or article and read it aloud, paying attention to pacing, intonation, and expression. (Helps develop a natural rhythm and improve delivery)
