Parent Function Quick-Reference

Linear: f(x) = x  (Straight line)

Quadratic: f(x) = x^2  (The U shape)

Cubic: f(x) = x^3  (The S shape)

Absolute Value: f(x) = |x|  (The V shape)

Square Root: f(x) = \sqrt{x}  (The "half-curve")

Exponential: f(x) = 2^x  (The "hockey stick" curve)

Inside the parentheses/root/bars: Left or Right (Opposite Day!)

• (x + 5) is Left 5

• (x - 5) is Right 5

Outside at the end: Up or Down (Normal Day!)

• + 5 is Up 5

• - 5 is Down 5
