This multi-species past, not our current exclusivity, is biologically normal.
The Cost of Thinking
Defining Characteristics of Humans:
Extraordinarily Large Brains: Mammals weighing kilograms typically have a cubic centimeter (cc) brain. Earliest humans ( MYA) had brains of about cc. Modern Sapiens brains average cc. Neanderthals had even larger brains.
Energy Drain: A large brain is a significant energy consumer. In Homo sapiens, the brain constitutes percent of body weight but consumes percent of resting energy (compared to percent for other apes).
Evolutionary Trade-offs: Archaic humans paid for large brains by spending more time foraging and experiencing muscle atrophy (energy diverted from biceps to neurons). This was not an obvious survival advantage initially, as early humans with large brains and flint knives were still vulnerable to predators.

Upright Bipedalism: Walking on two legs offers several advantages:

Childbirth Difficulties: Upright gait necessitated narrower hips, constricting the birth canal, which coincided with increasing infant head size. Death in childbirth became a major hazard for human females.
Premature Births: Natural selection favored earlier births, meaning human babies are born prematurely with underdeveloped vital systems. They are helpless and dependent for many years, unlike other animal offspring (e.g., colt can trot after birth, kitten forages in weeks).
Social Implications: Helpless offspring necessitated strong social ties and communal childcare (
