Chemical Bonds

Ionic bond

  • electrostatic forces b/w ion of opposite charges

  • norm b/w non metal and metal

  • makes solids

  • strongest bonds

  • brittle

  • crystalline

  • break with smooth surface(cleaved)

  • lots of energy required to break

Covalent bond

  • sharing electron b/w two atoms

  • norm b/w two or more non metals

  • orbital/electron clouds overlap

  • more flexible

  • most compounds exist as molecules (only covalent)

Metallic bond

  • attraction b/w positive nuclei of metals and sea of electrons

  • shares electrons like crazy

  • fixed cations, electrons flow

  • malleable

  • ductile

Octet rule:

  • atoms tend to gain lose share what’re they need to do in order to reach eight electrons

  • full s and full p
