Managing ESD

  • Static electricity is electricity that stays in one place until a discharge occurs.

  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage electronic equipment; as little as 100 volts can cause damage.

  • Preventative measures for ESD:

    • Keep humidity level over 60% (impractical in most environments).

    • Touch exposed metal on the device to equalize electrical potential (self-ground).

    • Always unplug the power connection from the device.

    • Never connect yourself to the building's electrical grounding system (significant safety concern).

    • Wear an anti-static strap to maintain a continuous connection.

    • Use an anti-static pad on your desktop.

    • Use an anti-static mat if you move around a lot.

    • Store or transport components in an anti-static bag.

  • When handling electronic components, hold them by the edges.

  • Store computers and devices in a regulated environment (50-80 degrees Fahrenheit or 10-27 degrees Celsius).

  • Use silica gel packs to protect components from humidity during shipping.

  • If the original box is unavailable, use bubble wrap and an anti-static bag for storage.
