Unit 6 quiz 2 textbook notes internal structures of cities

Urban land use

  • social, economic, and spatial processes determine the land use of structures of cities. Cost of land increases as you get closer to the CBD. Competition for accessible sites near the city center is an important determinant of land use patterns. Accessibility of city center and its high land valye attract different services. (Commercial, public, etc.)

  • bidders are prepared to pay different costs of land for location at carious differences from the city center.

  • bid rent theory assumes that city exists on a flat featureless plane, with a single CBD. Another is consistent city transportation. Cities include different zones, with distinct land uses/purposes other than the CBD

Types of models

Burgess concentric zone model = proposes that cities grow outwards from CBD in a series of concentric rings, each with distinct land uses and socioeconomic clusters.(think captain americas sheild)

Holt Sector Model = cities grow in a wedge-shaped sectors radiating outward from the CD along transportation routes, rather than concentric rings, and that different land uses are not randomly distributed, but follow specific patterns based on economic and social factors. (Think plain pizza)

Multiple nuclei model = landuse patterns in most large cities develope around a number of nuclei or smaller centers than one single center, as described in the concentric or sector models. (think peporoni pizza)

galactic city model = describes a descentralized urban area with multiple specialized suburban areas connected by transportation, and focus on edge cities (airports) rather than a single dominant centeral business district.

Latin american city model = emphasizes CBD in the middle, with a commercial spine, elite housing, and concentric zones of decreasing housing quality as one moves forward

African city model = has 3 types of CBDs, and the ethnic/segregated nature of residential zones. contains pre-colonial, European colonial, and post colonial elements and is or was segregated by race in subsaharan africa.

south east asian city model = unclear CBD, port zones, outward growth of residential areas, models historical impact of colonialism.

Assumptions + limitations of geographic models

  • many cities have aspects of more than 1 of these models. They are based on assumptions, and are heavily dependent on certain things.
