Definition of the Eucharist

  • The Eucharist is believed to be:
    • Body of Christ: The real presence of Jesus.
    • Blood of Christ: The wine represents His blood.
    • Soul and Divinity: Comprehensive belief that the entirety of Christ is present.
  • Appearance: The Eucharist comes in the forms of two species:
    • Bread
    • Wine

Etymology of the Word "Eucharist"

  • Origin: From the Greek word Eucharista, meaning "Thanksgiving."
    • Reflects the action during the Last Supper when Jesus gives thanks before the Institution of the Eucharist.
  • Significance at Last Supper:
    • Jesus breaks bread saying, "This is my body," signifying the establishment of the Eucharist.

Importance of the Eucharist in Catholic Faith

  • Central sacrament in Catholicism representing communion with God.
  • Seen as a way to connect believers with Jesus and the Church community.
