Instructions:
Setup (10 minutes):
Before the class, prepare 5 envelopes for each group with different linear equation problems (3-4 problems per envelope) of varying difficulty, including both simple and word problems. Each correct solution will provide a code to unlock the next envelope, leading towards a final challenge.
For example, the first envelope may contain simple equations, like
2x + 3 = 11, and solving these correctly gives clues to unlock the next envelope.
Group Formation (5 minutes):
Divide the class into groups of 4-5 students and assign each group to a starting point with one envelope. Ensure a mix of abilities in each group.
Escape Room Challenge (30 minutes):
Begin the challenge: students will work collaboratively on the first envelope’s problems. When they solve all equations correctly, they can open the envelope, and the solutions will provide a code or clue to progress to the next envelope.
Continue this process until groups unlock all five envelopes. Encourage students to communicate their thought processes, helping solidify their understanding.
Monitor time and provide hints only if groups are stuck for too long.
Wrap-Up Discussion (15 minutes):
Gather the class together and discuss the strategies used to solve the equations. Ask each group to share one key takeaway from their experience.
