Molecular Formula - 28

Smell detects molecular substances.

When we breathe something in it connects to the Olfactory Bulb in our brain which can tell us what the smells are.

Molecular Formula: Describes the makeup of a molecular covalent compound.

Ex) C6H12O6

All the Molecules

  • Contain carbon and hydrogen atoms

  • Have more hydrogen atoms than carbon atoms

  • Are composed of three different types of atoms

Minty Smells

  • Contain 1 oxygen atom

  • contain 10 carbon atoms

  • have even numbers of carbon and hydrogen atoms have names ending in “-one”

Ex) C10H14O, L-carvone, C10H16O, Pulegone

Sweet Smells

  • contain 2 oxygen atoms

  • have 2x as many hydrogen atoms as they do carbon atoms

  • have 2 word names ending in “ate”

Ex) C7H14O2, Ethyl pentanoate, C8H16O2, Hexyl acetate

Fishy Smells

  • contain a nitrogen atom

  • Do not contain oxygen atoms

Ex) C8H19N, Diisotylamine
