Slavery- the treatment of people
Conquistador- Spanish soldier/ explorers, especially those who conquered the native peoples of Mexico or Peru
Colony- a new settlement or territory established and governed by a country in another land
Missionaries- people who travel to a territory or community in order to make converts to their religion
Trappers- adventures who capture and kill animals, such as beavers, for their fur
Spain starts an empire; Great change in Europe occurred over two centuries. The rediscovered writings of Ancient Greece and Rome, heavily inspired a new interest in learning and art. This period became known as the Renaissance.
Columbus’s Discoveries; studied maps of the world, convinced about a short route. Went on a sponsored voyage in August 1492, and discovered America. Slavery comes to America, and there was a high death rate in Native Americans.
Spanish Borderlands; Florida: a Spanish expedition led by Juan Ponce de Leon. They found gold, etc. Settling the Borderlands, conquistadors explored new territories and claimed them for them for Spain. James Town was the first English Colony.
The lost Colony of Roanoke; Sir Walter Raleigh tried to start a new colony, but while gone for three years in England the colony disappeared. When sir Walter returned the colony and his family were gone and were never found.
